ActionAid is currently working in the North West of Nepal in Bardia. This is one of the poorest areas of the country which means your help is even more important. I will be helping the Kamaiya people, freed former bonded labourers, to build houses in their communities. For this challenge as there is no real tourist infrastructure, I will be living under canvas for the week close to the area where I will be building.
What is the need in Bardia?
In July 2000 the Nepalese Government ended the despicable practice of bonded labour which for generations had blighted the lives of the Kamaiya people. They have been forced to serve their masters to pay back loans taken out by their ancestors and as the debts, clouded by the passage of time, became incalcuable simply carried on serving as labourers from generation to generation. The intial euphoria of freedom however faded quickly as the freed Kamaiyas found themselves without shelter or means of making a living. Many had abandoned their landlords' home or were forced to leave, becoming economically disadvantaged and once again exploited as a result.
ActionAid has been working in Nepal since 1982. They have been working with the former Kamaiya to help them understand they have rights to land and housing and to provide shelter. They have already built over 500 houses and with your help, they will build more.
What kind of tasks might I be asked to do?
No previous building experience is necessary. I could be digging foundations, clearing land, mixing concrete or mortar, laying bricks or blocks, helping to install window or door frames, painting or plastering. I will be working alongside the local people and I will be under the direction of an ActionAid construction supervisor and skilled local craftsmen.
Hardwork is forecast and a typical working day finishes at 6.
